UPDATimes - CARACAS - The United States (US) has threatened to stop five Iranian tankers carrying 1.5 million barrels of fuel supply to Venezuela.Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez reacted after learning that the US had sent four warships to Caribbean waters to stop the supply of fuel transported by Iranian tankers.

"When they enter our exclusive economic zone, they will be escorted by Bolivarian National Armed Forces ships and aircraft to welcome them and thank the Iranian people for their solidarity and cooperation," Padrino Lopez said on Wednesday (5/20/2020).

On the other hand, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi criticized and accused the United States of making threats of piracy. He stressed that Iran would provide a firm response if the US impeded the free and legal shipping of the five tankers.

The supply was badly needed by Venezuela after its oil industry was paralyzed by the economic and political crisis and compounded by unilateral sanctions imposed by the US.
