UPDATimes - Mercedes-Benz has reportedly stopped its collaboration with its partner BMW in their partnership to build an autonomous car, aka a car without a driver. To continue the project, they partnered with electronics company NVIDIA.

This new Mercedes and NVIDIA partnership will focus on creating revolutionary computing systems in revolutionary vehicles, including artificial intelligence (AI) computing infrastructure that will be launched in its product range starting in 2024.

Mercedes-Benz's step is somewhat unique, because its approach to building autonomous cars, directly involves technology companies that can upgrade their supporting devices, as did Tesla and his partners.

It is still fresh in our minds that last year the BMW and Mercedes-Benz who were like mortal enemies in the world of premium cars finally cooperated with each other in developing autonomous car technology. This long-term collaboration was initially aimed at 2024 as a stage for their collaboration. Unfortunately, that dream will only become a dream at this time.

Referring to the existing conditions, including the uncertain economic conditions after COVID-19, both of them finally made the decision to end the joint project. In their official release, the two German companies said, "after conducting a wider review in their second discussion, both parties concluded that considering the amount of costs incurred to create a platform that would be used together, and the current economic conditions, the time would not be right to implement the results of their cooperation ". The meaning is clear, both of them chose to end the collaboration to reduce their financial burden.

As we all know, BMW has just decided to lay off 10 thousand contract employees, while Mercedes-Benz acknowledged a 78% decline in profits in the first quarter of 2020. Meanwhile, at the same time, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz must also be responsible for their collaboration with other parties that already exist. BMW with Intel, Mobileye, FCA and Ansys, while Mercedes-Benz with BOSCH. This collaboration between BMW and Mercedes-Benz itself will actually celebrate the first anniversary in July, where both should work together in developing, testing and validating autonomous technology.

In addition, this collaboration was initially promising because both targets were to realize level 4 or high automation autonomous technology. Although the collaboration in autonomous technology midwives has ended, BMW and Mercedes-Benz will still sit at the same table in terms of product development. Both still have a partnership with other German brands, namely Audi for Here Technology, a consortium owned by BMW, Audi and Daimler. Here Tech itself is located in the Netherlands, and was previously named Nokia Here. This company focuses on developing GPS and Navigation technology.

So what do you think, friend?
