UPDATimes - Food wrappers, which are mostly made of plastic, are one of the biggest contributors to waste. Plastic that is difficult to decompose makes it very unfriendly to the environment.
Well, not long ago, thanks to a study conducted in Thailand, the country's Ministry of Agriculture succeeded in making food packages that were very environmentally friendly.
Quoting Asia One, the food packaging in question is made of carrots and could be one of the efforts to reduce plastic waste.
"So the department's research division looked for environmentally friendly alternatives and found that carrots are the most suitable candidates for making takeout," said Sermsuk Salakphet.
Because it is made from carrots, the food wrap can be eaten because it is very safe for consumption.
Before creating food packages made from carrots, Sermsuk said that his side first conducted research on various types of fruits and vegetables containing high pectin, cellulose, and starches such as purple cabbage, tomatoes, mangoes.
Each type of fruit and vegetable is mashed and then thinned. After everything is finished, the ingredients made from carrots can be the most environmentally friendly food wrappers.
"Carrots at a concentration of 30% produce the best results for elasticity and strength. We also add other edible substances to increase the resistance of the wrapper, including 3 percent alginate and 3.75% xyllitol," said Sermsuk.
Sermsuk also explained that food wrappers made from carrots can be used to wrap preserved fruit to last longer for up to two months.
"In addition, this food wrap is very nutritious with 3,465 micrograms of beta carotene per pack," Sermsuk added.
