China-India conflict: China uses 'self-defense trainers' after clashes with Indian troops on the border

UPDATimes - China says it is sending 20 martial arts trainers to the Tibetan plateau to train soldiers.

There was no mention of the reasons behind the decision, but this happened after at least 20 Indian soldiers were killed in clashes with Chinese troops on the border in the Himalayan highlands.

Under a 1996 agreement, Indian and Chinese troops were prohibited from carrying firearms or explosives at the Himalayan border.

China has so far not announced the number of casualties on its side, while India said 76 of its soldiers were wounded.

The news about the presence of martial arts trainers for the Chinese army was reported by the official Chinese news agency on June 20, according to Hong Kong media.

CCTV television said 20 martial arts trainers from Enbo Fight Club would be based in the Tibetan capital Lhasa, although Chinese media did not confirm whether the individuals would train their troops on the border with India.

China and India - both of which have nuclear powers - blamed each other over the clashes in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh on June 15.

Indian troops patrol near Leh, in the disputed Ladakh region.
The region, which is partly a plateau with a harsh climate, is not far from the Aksai Chin region, a disputed area claimed by India but controlled by China.

The killing of army personnel as a result of the clash was the first death case on the journey of the clashes between the two parties in nearly half a century.

However, longstanding tensions between India and China over the LAC (Actual Control Line), the designation of the disputed border between the two countries, increased again in the weeks leading up to the violence.
