UPDATimes - But Udi Ofer, as director of the Justice Division at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), believes that the United States needs more than just the above: The US needs to change its culture and attitude towards the role of the police.

Police affairs are a very decentralized area in the US federal system. According to Ofer, the police force absorbs 40% of the budget in several cities.

Armed police were mobilized to handle various situations. Their presence can potentially increase conflict, such as patrolling schools and dealing with violations by minors.

Every second one person is arrested, and in total there were 10.3 million arrests in 2018, according to FBI estimates.

Ofer said the majority of those arrested were not linked to violent crimes. George Floyd is suspected of trying to use counterfeit money in a shop.

This wave of demonstrations was compared with the civil rights struggle of the 1960s.

When the wave of protest showed no sign of abating, despite the risk of Covid-19 transmission, activists wanted to channel the anger from the streets into "transformational change".

"There are some fundamental problems related to police violence and racism in the United States. And despite decades of efforts to control it, we have not succeeded," Ofer said.

"We will not be able to overcome this problem through individual demands against a police officer," he concluded.
