Covid-19: Beijing is afraid of the second wave after finding dozens of new cases on the market

Friday, July 19, 2020

UPDATimes - Beijing recorded 36 new cases of the corona virus that were transmitted domestically, when people worried about the second wave of Covid-19 in the Chinese capital.

An additional 36 other cases were recorded on Saturday (13/06). Beijing has never reported a new case in more than 50 days.

China's Deputy Prime Minister, Sun Chunlan, called on officials to take "decisive steps" while warning that the risk of spread was still high.

The outbreak of this outbreak is associated with the largest wholesale market in the city.

A total of 79 positive cases are all related to the Xinfadi market, said the Global Times.

Regional quarantine has been implemented in 11 nearby areas, while 10,000 market staff will undergo tests.

On Monday (15/06), 10 other residential areas around the market were closed to audiences other than residents, according to CGTN. No visitors or delivery services are allowed in, but residents can go in and out.

Schools and PAUD near the market were ordered to dismiss students and the opening of primary schools, which is scheduled to take place on Monday (6/15), has been postponed, the Global Times said.

Local media reports said the corona virus was found on a cutting board used to clean scales and cut salmon in the market. This prompted large supermarkets in Beijing to pull the fish from their shelves.

The outbreak of this outbreak is associated with the largest wholesale market in Beijing, the Xinfadi market.

Second wave worries

Xinfadi Market in Fengtai district, southwest of Beijing city, was closed on Saturday (13/06) in the morning after two people who had recently visited the market were reported to be affected by Covid-19.

Tests on the market then showed 45 people carried the virus.

The head of epidemiology at the China Center for Disease Prevention and Management said the strains of viruses found in Beijing were not similar to the type of corona virus that circulated throughout China.

The potential of this second wave surfaced when normal life resumed in Beijing and most of mainland China.

Chinese citizens have returned to the workplace and students have returned to school - although some restrictions are still in place.

Xinfadi Market is the biggest wholesale market in Beijing.

"In line with the principle of prioritizing public safety and health, we have implemented quarantine measures for the Xinfadi market and the surrounding environment," Chu Junwei, a district official, said at a briefing meeting.

The district is now in a "wartime emergency mode", he added.

Hundreds of military police have entered the market which is now quarantined. The transportation network and the nearest school have been closed.

Shortly thereafter in Beijing all sports activities were canceled and major public facilities were closed again.

The corona virus outbreak in China is controlled through some of the most stringent restrictive measures in the world after the disease was detected in Wuhan city.

More than 4,600 people in China have lost their lives due to the corona virus; while worldwide 426,000 people have died, according to John Hopkins University.
